We bought the Mr. Heater MH60QFAV for several reasons (besides its cost):
It has continuous ignition, which means the igniter runs continuously while the heater is running, so should it get knocked over, or the propane line have a ‘burp’ the flame will automatically reignite.
It has a variable heat setting, allowing a BTU output of 30K through 60K. We use the 60K to preheat the shop, and then use electric heating to maintain the temperature. It normally takes less than 10 minutes to get up to 72 degrees (F).
It doesn’t stink the place up. You can smell a light scent, but it’s not overwhelming.
This heater is quiet, light, smaller than older models of torpedo heaters, has a very long gas line (almost 9’), and the front of the heater can be elevated by an adjustment knob.
The best thing about it is my wife trusts it, and lights it herself.

So I thought I'd try this one since it was rated high and it is way better. It's easy to start (no having to keep popping that starer button over and over, just push hold the button down and it instantly starts, and it stays running. It also has that adjustment for 30,000 to 60,000 BTU which is super nice. And man, when it's set to 60,000 it puts out a TON of heat, the thermometer on our garage wall went from 38 degrees to 91 degrees after just 30 minutes of running, was actually so hot out there I had to shut it off. Really great heater.
I purchased a Variable voltage control. ZOWZEA 120V ac motor control and it works great, slows fan down just a little when on low gas setting and becomes much quieter.
After the first big such storm we ended up no running water for a week, and once it all thawed out we had busted pipes at the well. During that storm we also lost power which caused our pipe heat tape and electric heater to stop working.
This year (January 2024) we had similar weather and didn't want a recurrence, so we did a couple of things. First, after the last storm we got a Honda generator to keep the pipe tape working. Second, we got this propane heater to keep things thawed out. We also could use the generator to keep both the pipe tape and the fan of this heater working if the power went out.
I was able to use this heater on the lowest setting, and with a 20 gallon propane tank it would run for 12-ish hours, enough to get us through the coldest overnight periods. I have an inventory of four propane tanks so I was able to keep it going each night and get tanks refilled during the days.
Note that this heater is not rated for outdoor use, but where my well is I have a (non-flammable) table that I set over the heater as a rain/snow block, and it worked just fine and kept everything thawed and flowing through the storm. Highly recommended.
Oh, and I already have contractors giving me bids for a well house to permanently solve the issue. :)
It did.
Using propane (a 20lb tank seems to last about 5 or 6 hours on high) and an electric connection (for ignition and the fan motor) this little cannon put out enough heat to warm a table of 12. Those closest to the heater were quite a bit warmer than those 12 feet away at the other side of the table so everyone chose their seating based on their cold tolerances.
Setting up the heater was easy and everything but a full propane tank and an extension cord is included. The unit is nicely made and the outside of the heater does not get dangerously warm (double wall construction) even after hours of use--a big safety plus.
The unit has (as all propane appliances do) a safety thermocouple which only allows the gas to flow to the heater when it is producing heat and it seems to work well.
The noise from the heater is substantial, a combination of the propane flame and the fairly powerful fan motor creates a bit of a roar. But our guests didn't seem to mind so long as they were toasty.

Overall, very easy to use, and gives your BBQ propane cylinder a use for the entire year (vs just BBQ season).
Claims to be quiet. It’s not but what do you expect. It’s an air blower. Unless Dyson comes out with a 3000 dollar version of this that’s whisper quiet don’t hold your breath. Great unit. Much quieter than others. If you need heat. Don’t mind a little fan noise ( you can talk over it albeit Loud talking) this is worth buying.
