Leica DISTO S910
The world's first handheld laser distance meter that allows you to capture 3D measurements from a single location and transfer those points into any CAD program through a DXF file. The DISTO S910 allows you to remotely measure any distance or length without having to traditionally shoot across the object from one corner to the next. With this capability you can measure roofs, houses, buildings, siding etc. without entering the property or getting a ladder out of the truck to measure. Definitely a compact, affordable unit with endless possibilities.

I'll start with the documentation, namely the "User's Manual". This is a flipping joke! The "manual" is nothing more than a pocket guide on how to perform a given function. One would think that they would include a nice, scored and laminated pocket guide that would fold appropriately and slide into the annoying case (I'll get there in a moment). These engineers in Switzerland seem to be so utterly versed in the functions of their units and, being engineers, seem to assume that anyone who would by their products already knows what exactly the function does and how careful execution of the simplistic, visual only, steps in the "users manual" would bring one to the desired final measurement. Come on! A users manual should be exactly that: A manual that details the individual function's math and methodology, with a little elaboration on what happens with each step. Maybe those knuckleheads will read this and "engineer" a user's manual with the same elegance and power they put into the what one is using. Maybe they made this lame little manual, which is pretty much the quick guide, totally visual so they didn't have to actually write something kind of lengthy that would then have to be translated into the languages of all the people worldwide who would use this product. I PAID $850 FOR THIS THING!!! How about a real manual??? Something akin to what came with my graphing calculators maybe????
I know, this is a bit of a rant and I should at this point say that when I can figure out the function and measurement I am performing, I can't help but smile at the elegance of what I hold in my hand...it is, hand down, the best device in its class by far.
It loses one star for F#!*@NG USELESS manual.
OK, I got that out of my system. Now, on to the case.
The D810 loses the second star for the case and design of the "power on" / "Dist" button. Since the buttons are put together, I question the common sense of those damn Swiss engineers. I am a civil engineer who began my engineering studies at thirty six years of age and I have noticed, in the six years of university and fourteen years of engineering practice, that many PhD professors in engineering, as well as other disciplines, are educated far beyond their intelligence level. As applied to engineers, I have seen a lack of common sense beyond the theoretical confines of the laboratory that astounds me. They can engineer any number of wet paper bags that they could walk into, but, using common sense, get back out? Not so much!
Sorry again, my ranting is directed more at engineers in general than towards those masters at Leica. Which would lead me to wonder who actually decided to put the "power on" button right smack in the middle of the front face. Power buttons should be small, unobtrusive, out of the way and hard to actuate without a specific action that can not happen while the unit is safely tucked away in its case.
But NO....some dip wad decided to combine it with the button that actuates the function you want to execute. That person should be put inside the aforementioned wet paper bag and then someone with some common sense could install a proper power button (the power off button is better). Why not a "power on / power off" button under a sliding door, like the mini USB port? Or a small, "out of the way" button like the "clear / off" button?
The reason this is such a big issue is that the padded case is not rigid enough to prevent turning the unit on while it is tucked away safely in my pocket. Today is the third time that the battery was completely dead when I pulled it out of my vest pocket to use it. Yesterday it had better than 75% battery and now it won't even turn on to tell me I need to hook it to a charger. I had to walk all the way back to my field office and plug it in to the wall so it will charge.
I think I can rule out defective battery or inadequate capacity, since those engineers in Switzerland have been making batteries for Total Stations for years. So we go back to the...ahem...let me be more polite...shortsighted design of the "power on" button being combined with the function activation button (DIST). Maybe this issue slipped by because all the survey equipment has ballistic hard shell cases with shock absorbing interior foams to protect the unit from accidental activation and dust.
Dust is my other gripe about the case. This belt case is better than those included with the lesser Disto models, but its still has openings right at the top on both sides. In the field and on construction sites we work in dusty environments. This case should have a Velcro flap with sides that seal up just enough to prevent dust from getting into the unit's space. And did I mention it should be rigid? If this thing was attached to my belt and I accidentally bumped against one of many possible protrusions, the awesome touch screen would be broken and would cry.
I spent $850 on this thing and hope to keep it working until they come out with a new case and a proper user's manual.
The bottom line: The unit is well worth the $850 price tag. The camera function that they tout in the advertisement alone is worth the price. BUY IT!! But be aware of the shortcoming with the power button and the "user's manual". If those issues were on the same level as the rest of the unit, I would give way more than five stars on the five star scale.
BTW: As I wrote this review the unit has gone from dead to about 80% charge and I have vented. Now I'll copy and paste this to Leica in Switzerland and go back to work.
Top reviews from other countries
The really nice function within the device is the ability to measure pipe diameters at a distance, which is tremendously helpful when piping can be seen but is inaccessible for contact measurement. A good example of this is standing on the plant floor, and the pipes that you want to measure are 1 or more stories above.
Using the color screen to view the target is also extremely helpful (if not essential), as the red dot is often not visible when making long outdoor measurements.
I've only touched on a few things here because I've yet to go through the whole manual. In general, this is a fantastic device and highly recommended for field use.
