Product Description

Product Description

The DW660 Cut-Out Tool has a powerful 5.0 Amp, 30,000 rpm motor with a slim design and durable construction. Features fast and tool-free bit changing and easy operation with the turn-on/bump-off switch.

Amazon.com

In recent years, rotary cutout tools have soared in popularity, due mainly to a series of television infomercials promoting one brand. Though it doesn't receive the TV airplay of its main competitor, this DeWalt model uses a durable 5 amp motor--the most powerful motor yet in a cutout tool--making it a great tool for professional drywallers, electricians, and carpenters. To help battle dust infiltration, the tool features a sealed motor and switch, a must for any serious drywall tool. It also sports a quick-and-easy, tool-free bit-changing system and comes with both 1/8 and 1/4 inch collets. We really like the bump-off switch for quick tool shutdown and the simple and effective tool-free depth adjustments. Like other rotary cutout tools, this one uses spiral cutting bits, which work equally well plunging into a cut as they do laterally. In our test we found the DeWalt to be smooth running with low vibration. We had no problem plunging and cutting through 1-1/2 inches of solid birch, whizzing through drywall, and tearing through tile. In fact, this tool has more power than you'd expect from something of its size, and if you aren't paying attention, it can get away from you--an easier to live with problem than lack of power. Some extraordinary claims have been made about rotary cutout tools, and while DeWalt's cutout tool is as versatile as any we've tried, and a bit more powerful than most, it's most effective at what it was designed for--quick cutouts in drywall, tile, and plywood. --Brian Trinen

Awesome on a CNC router

Awesome on a CNC router
My high school students designed and built a CNC router on the cheap, with a used DW660 as its cutter. After two years (a couple hundred hours) of use, the motor went in the one I picked up at a flea market. Considering the expected use for a tool like this is minutes at a time and we tend to use it for hours long cuts, we definitely got our money's worth. We just bought one a couple of weeks ago here to replace it.Yes, the tool free change system is somewhat difficult to use, but if it's that big of a deal to you, it can be taken off and you can use a wrench many of the other brands have. That part went bad on mine near the end, and I did just that. It's not a big deal. You can google how to do it.The only real drawback to using this on your router is the noise and the lack of speed control. It's much louder than any spindle. I get a reading of 85db a few feet away from it, though that is somewhat unreliable since it's using a smart phone app instead of a properly calibrated instrument. It's much more powerful than most spindles, so the only reasons I'd think of switching would be the noise and the lack of speed control. Spinning at 30,000rpm works for wood better than you think, though you have to keep your movement speed up so the wood doesn't catch fire. (not a joke) The problem with the fast cutting speed comes to substances like Plexiglas. It tends to melt instead of cutting re-solidifies after the cutter goes through. A router speed controller can be used to help this problem somewhat, though it loses too much power if you go too low Yescom Variable Fan/Router Speed Controller 3 Settings Hydroponics Inline Fan Exhaust Air 500W to 1500W AdjusterI should mention that the old one gave out not very long after I started using a router speed controller with it. I know that they are controversial... I'm not sure if it had anything to do with the motor giving the ghost since the new one sounds better than I can remember the old one sounding for quite a while.
