Amazon.com
In recent years, rotary cutout tools have soared in popularity, due mainly to a series of television infomercials promoting one brand. Though it doesn't receive the TV airplay of its main competitor, this DeWalt model uses a durable 5 amp motor--the most powerful motor yet in a cutout tool--making it a great tool for professional drywallers, electricians, and carpenters. To help battle dust infiltration, the tool features a sealed motor and switch, a must for any serious drywall tool. It also sports a quick-and-easy, tool-free bit-changing system and comes with both 1/8 and 1/4 inch collets. We really like the bump-off switch for quick tool shutdown and the simple and effective tool-free depth adjustments. Like other rotary cutout tools, this one uses spiral cutting bits, which work equally well plunging into a cut as they do laterally. In our test we found the DeWalt to be smooth running with low vibration. We had no problem plunging and cutting through 1-1/2 inches of solid birch, whizzing through drywall, and tearing through tile. In fact, this tool has more power than you'd expect from something of its size, and if you aren't paying attention, it can get away from you--an easier to live with problem than lack of power. Some extraordinary claims have been made about rotary cutout tools, and while DeWalt's cutout tool is as versatile as any we've tried, and a bit more powerful than most, it's most effective at what it was designed for--quick cutouts in drywall, tile, and plywood. --Brian Trinen

This rotary saw cut through 3/4" hardwood and 3/4" treated exterior pine plywood -- yes folks, like a hot knife through butter. With the first cut I knew I had hit the jack-pot. There was no strain on the tool, it handled the wood effortlessly, and I had no trouble controlling it as I cut freehanded through the wood. The ring guide kept the blade perpendicular to the wood and the cuts were clean and smooth. I cut a lot of scallops; circles; scrolls; curls and whatnots through several pieces of 7 - 8 foot long boards and with this saw I did it fast. I bought just the saw because I did not know if it would work but I would advise people to also purchase the D-handle attachment you can get for it. I think it would make holding the tool more comfortable; especially if you are doing a lot of cutting. By the time I was finished I had cramps in my fingers for several days. And that is the ONLY complaint I have.
I realize 7 foot long boards would have been very cumbersome to maneuver through a scroll saw or even a band saw and a jig saw just would have taken way too long. I did my whole project in one 2-day weekend. Thank you DeWalt! Thank you Amazon for getting it to me in less than 4 days!
Oh and I forgot to mention, I am a 52 year old woman and I am proudly a woodworker with 23 years experience at the craft! So stand back -- look out -- I'm on fire now. When I get done the neighborhood will never be the same!
I also routinely will install new outlets (either electric or home theater) and used to use a drywall saw or a dremel. Neither was particularly good, and I had a lot of ragged cuts.
I used this to demo about 4 houses after the massive flooding in Houston last August. I know from experience that cutting a straight and clean line at 4’ is key for a good renovation, but also know that a good tool needs to get the job done quickly.
This fit the bill. I started with a straight edge, but after 15 minutes I was able to cut free hand nice and straight (I have a Dewalt laser level to give me a line). The bits are durable; even so I’d recommend getting extras because a sharp bit makes a big difference.
It really excels at cutting out outlet boxes in existing drywall. I made a jig for the cuts, and the cuts look professional. Very quick.
As with all my Dewalt tools it is tough and powerful. Changing bits is quick once you figure out how to loosen and tighten the chuck. I’d suggest watching a video on this, as Dewalt tool instructions are kind of like using an old road map.
Nice tool.
Just received this tool yesterday. Wanted to test on a piece of 3/4" plyboard to assess the power, speed, etc. Used 1/8" RotoZip multipurpose bits. Just a note on these, the Dewalt ONLY takes 1/8" OR 1/4" bits. Be careful when buying bits as the Rotozip line of bits also comes in a 5/32" bit, which will NOT fit in this drill.
Not sure if I understood the directions on how to insert or remove a bit using the lock and unlock buttons. I found it easier just to get an open ended socket wrench to do these functions. Will go back and read to see if I missed something.
Tested a cutout for a low voltage install. Overall, very pleased with the power, and speed at which I was able to make the cutout. Did two cutouts and each took no more than a minute, which was very nice considering the thickness of the board. Would imagine that it would go even faster on thinner material.
Did notice that the dust did go all over the place, as noted in other reviews for this product. HOWEVER, given the power that this has and the speed in which it cuts, I'll gladly spend the extra 2 minutes with a shop vac instead of getting a shoulder workout with a handsaw.
Overall, very pleased with first impression and test.
My only negative here is the single bit included in the package is pretty sub standard. I snapped the bit with 2 minutes of cutting drywall. I initially thought it was me, so I purchased some more bits that were highly rated. I spent 5 hours cutting drywall with the new bits and no issues.
Even though the bit is bad, the tool is great. I would definitely recommend, but purchase bits at the same time.
